The Alabama Department of Corrections generally oversees the operation of all penal institutions within this state. As of 2018, the cumulative average of the daily population in these facilities was 26841. Apart from the state-run facilities, the state prison system also features four work release centers, two boot camps, and one forestry camp. The total capacity of inmates in these correctional institutions is 13718 incarcerated individuals.  

In the fiscal year 2015, the state Department of Correction had a total budget of $385 million. It employed 3560 individuals, including 2160 corrections officers. The average salary for a corrections officer in this state is $31,040 per year.  

What are Alabama Inmate Records? 

Inmate records in Alabama are files containing regarding offenders or detainees in state prisons, county jails, work centers, camps, and penitentiaries in Alabama. These records typically comprise personal and administrative information. Generally, personal information includes identifying details such as the offender's full name, age, date of birth, gender, race, nationality, ethnicity, and physical description (eye color, hair color, height, weight, scars, tattoos, and other marks). You can also expect to view the offender's official details, such as the inmate's registration number, mugshots, fingerprint, current charges, sentence, bail or bond amount, arresting agency, court dates, booking information, and projected release date.  

According to Alabama open record laws, most inmate records and related information are publicly available. This means that the general public or interested parties can inspect or obtain these records upon request. At the state level, you can obtain them from the Alabama Department of Corrections. Alternatively, the public can get these files from local sheriff's offices or police departments.

How to Find a State Prisoner 

As mentioned above, ADOC is responsible for the safety, security, and custody of all offenders serving time in state-run correctional facilities. To find out about or locate an inmate in a state prison, visit the ADOC's official website and click "Inmate Search." It is essential to note that this search tool only contains currently incarcerated offenders; it does not contain any historical data. It allows you to conduct an inmate search using the inmate's full name or the assigned Alabama Institutional Serial (AIS) Number.  

You can also obtain inmate records by submitting a public records request to the Department. Remember, all requests must include a completed public records request form.  

County Jail Inmate Lookup 

Generally, county jails in Alabama often house arrestees awaiting trial or bond and inmates serving sentences, usually less than a year. Sometimes, they may have inmates serving longer sentences if the state prisons are overcrowded. County Sheriff's Offices operate county jails.  

Most county jails have an online inmate roster containing a list of current detainees and offenders. Other jails allow you to search using a locator tool on the designated sheriff's website. You can also call the jail directly to inquire about a loved one. 

Federal Prisoner Search 

There are two federal prisons alongside three prison camps in Alabama, housing about 2566 incarcerated offenders. To locate a federal prisoner, visit the Federal Bureau of Prisons website and click "Find an Inmate."  

ICE Detention
