Georgia features various correctional facilities, including state prisons, county jails, and private, federal, and community corrections. Georgia inmate records typically contain information regarding a convicted individual remanded in a correctional facility within Georgia. They primarily include personal and administrative details. Personal details include identifying information such as the inmate's full name, aliases, age, gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, mugshots, and physical description (height, weight, eye color, hair color, tattoos, scars). Administrative details include the offender's registration number, arresting agency, booking date and time, bail or bond amount, criminal history, custody status, current charges, fingerprints, sentence information, court dates, and projected release dates.

Under the Georgia Open Records Act, inmate records are public records. Therefore, you can obtain these records from legal custodians near you. The Georgia Department of Corrections maintains and disseminates inmate records at the state level. You can obtain these files at the county or municipal level from your county sheriff's office or local police department.

It is essential to note that not all inmate records are publicly available. Some records remain confidential, including medical records and information regarding juveniles in the corrections system.

Finding out about an incarcerated loved one or locating someone you know is quick and simple once you know where to search. Usually, conducting an inmate search varies depending on the type of correctional facility, as discussed below:

Georgia State Prisoner Lookup

The Georgia Department of Corrections operates 34 state prisons, holding around 52000 incarcerated offenders. Apart from these primary prisons, Georgia has 12 residential substance abuse treatment facilities, 12 transition centers, eight probation detention centers, and two integrated treatment facilities. Furthermore, the state also contracts with four private prisons.

State prisons are classified into Close, Medium, and Minimum security. These facilities typically house offenders serving long-term sentences, usually more than a year. A vast majority are those convicted of non-violent crimes, such as probation violation or drug possession. On the other hand, these prisons also hold prisoners serving long sentences for violent crimes.

To locate an inmate in these prisons, visit the DOC's official website and click "Offender Search." This tool allows you to conduct an inmate search using the following options:

  • Search by Name or Description: Enter Last Name, First Name, Gender, Race, Age, and Most Recent Institution
  • Search by ID or Case Number

You can also search with more parameters by clicking "More Options." Here, you can search using the offender's Alias, Middle Name, Height, Weight, Eye Color, Hair Color, Scars, Marks, Tattoos, Sentence Status, Primary Offense, and Conviction County.

How to Locate a Federal Prisoner

Georgia is home to five stand-alone federal prisons and two prison camps. The Southeast Regional Office oversees these federal correctional facilities. They house about 3031 incarcerated individuals. When locating a federal offender, the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is the first place to look.

This agency allows you to conduct an inmate search using the "Find an Inmate" search tool on the website. You can search using either of the following options:

  • Find By Number: BOP Register Number, DCDC Number, FBI Number, or INS Number
  • Find By Name: First, Middle, and Last Name, Race, Age, or Sex

How to Find an Inmate in a County Jail

County sheriff's offices operate and manage county jails in Georgia. Inmate searches in these facilities vary from county to county. Most county jails publish an online inmate roster on the sheriff's office's official website. Online inmate rosters typically contain a list of all current inmates at the particular jail facility.

Call the jail or sheriff's office to inquire about their whereabouts if you cannot find your loved one using online databases.
