Hawaii

Hawaii has one of the world's most unique prison systems, with the state having a prison on each major island. The prison system is divided into jails and prisons. The state has four jails and four prisons. The Corrections Division of the Department of Public Safety maintains that all these prisons house male and female offenders.

The jails in this state incarcerate pretrial inmates and transitional prisoners nearing release. On the other hand, the prisons incarcerate all sentenced inmates of various crime levels.

In addition, the state also has one federal detention center (FDC-Honolulu) for adult male and female offenders. The detention center detains all federal inmates from all levels of government before and during court proceedings.

Finding inmates in Hawaii

Finding inmates in the state can be challenging, especially if you do not know where to begin your search. The state does not have a ready-to-access inmate search database, although it maintains inmate records. Furthermore, the Corrections Division advises its residents to utilize the three methods of finding an inmate under their care. They include the following

  • Calling the specific jail or prison and requesting the search
  • Visiting the specific jail or prison in person to conduct the search
  • Hawaii SAVIN

The Division's website contains all the links to all prisons and jails in the state, including their contact information, directions, location, and operational hours. On the other hand, when utilizing Hawaii SAVIN, you must register with SAVIN to receive all the necessary updates about the inmate you seek. SAVIN is a free national resource for all crime victims who wish to keep an eye on their offenders while in prison. Those who register may receive updates and notifications by phone, email, message, or mail when the offender;

  • Escapes from prison
  • Is being released from prison
  • Is being transferred to another prison
  • Has been placed on solitary confinement or any other form of disciplinary action
  • Changes in their release dates

Finding Federal inmates in Hawaii

You can easily find a federal inmate in Hawaii, as the state only has one federal facility that incarcerates male and female offenders charged with violating federal laws. You must visit the Bureau of Prisons inmate locator database to locate these inmates. This database contains the information of all federal inmates under the BOP.

The database is searchable by offender names or numbers. The number option requires you to indicate which number you are using; BOP, FBI, INS, or DCDC numbers. Note that imputing the wrong inmate number will yield information belonging to another inmate.

Finding inmates using third-party websites

Privately owned websites nowadays have eased inmate search in the state. These websites require you to provide the name of the inmate you wish to find in addition to a physical description or age of the inmate. Its search engine runs through various government databases and provides search results that fit your inmate's description.

These websites may allow the searchers to access Hawaii inmate records for free or for a fee. Since they are privately owned, some of them may contain outdated information.
