The Idaho Department of Correction (IDOC) is responsible for the care and management of over 8,000 prisoners in nine state-run facilities and five community reintegration centers. In some cases, inmates may also be held at county jails or even contracted sites in other states.

Each of the 44 counties in Idaho maintain their own county jail, operated under the supervision of Contract Facility Monitoring Division. For anyone looking to track down an inmate, starting with a local search of the county jails is usually the best option. All individuals arrested in the state must pass through these jails prior to any release orders from courts.

Where to start when locating inmates in Idaho

When an individual is arrested by Idaho law enforcement, they are taken to their local station and presented in court for a bail hearing. If the person cannot pay bail, or is denied it, they are sent to the closest county jail or holding facility until their case is resolved.

Most county jails in Idaho have an online inmate roster that can be searched using the inmate's full name, date of arrest, and other details. Inmates' names may be organized alphabetically on this list for easy lookup. If you can't find the roster or your desired inmate, you can contact jail administrators or your county sheriff for more information.

Once a verdict has been reached in court, inmates will often be transferred to state prisons or federal facilities located in other states.

Locating inmates in the Idaho State Prisons

The IDOC Residents/Clients Inmate Search database contains data on those who are jailed, on probation, or on parole and those currently under IDOC's control. This database contains not only the name of the offenders but also their charges.

The database also has previously incarcerated residents' names but does not indicate their previous charges.

You may use the search engine to look up residents/clients by name or IDOC number. In addition, you may conduct partial searches but must at least indicate the first three characters of the person's name or IDOC number.

If you cannot find the inmate, you may contact the IDOC by phone, email, or mail or visit the department headquarters at 1299 N. Orchard St., Suite 110, Boise, ID 83706.

Can you find a federal inmate in Idaho?

When an individual is charged with a federal offense, they are transferred to a federal prison which the state has contracted with another state to house their federal inmates. This is because Idaho does not have any federal prison or detention facility.

However, you can still locate them using the Bureau of Prisons inmate locator database. The database allows searchers to locate inmates using their official first and last names with an option to fill in the middle name and use the inmate's BOP register, FB, INS, and DCDC number.
