Indiana

Indiana has 18 adult correctional facilities with minimum, medium, and maximum-security levels. They have a population of around 30,000 and are maintained by the Indiana Department of Corrections. This department also supervises individuals on probation, parole, and community reentry facilities.

You can find inmates incarcerated in Indiana state prisons using the Indiana Incarcerated Database Search. This database is searchable by the offender's first and last name or DOC number. The name option requires the searcher to indicate as much information as possible to help ease the inmate search process.

Each inmate who passes through the DOC database has a specific DOC number that is not identical to any other inmate. Thus, you only need to indicate the correct inmate's DOC number to pull out search results.

Inmates in County Jails

The state also operates a county jail system consisting of 92 county jails in 92 counties. The county sheriff's department maintains county jails in Indiana, which are used to house pretrial inmates. However, inmates with non-violent short-term sentences serve time in these jails.

To locate inmates in county jails, you can either find them using the;

  • Inmate roster
  • Contacting the jail administration or county sheriff's office
  • Visiting the county sheriff's office or the jail in-person

Most of these jails maintain an online inmate database that is readily accessible or searchable. Using the inmate roster, you can locate an inmate by their names, dates of incarceration, or arrests.

Contacting the jail or county sheriff's department is also an option considering that, at times, the inmate is in the facility but not on the inmate roster for various reasons.

Finding inmates in ICE Detention Facilities

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency also operates one detention facility in Indianapolis to detain immigrants who are charged with violating immigration laws. To find these inmates, you need to visit the detainee locator system to find them by their;

  • Official names
  • ICE number
  • Country of birth

You can also contact your local field agent and request that they locate your detainee.

Finding Federal Inmates

There is one federal prison in Indiana, the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI-Terre Haute), a medium security facility operated by the North Central Regional Office of the Bureau of Prisons.

You must use the BOP's official website's inmate locator tool to find these inmates. You can locate the inmates using their names or FBI, DCDC, INS, or BOP register numbers.

Finding Inmates Using Third-Party Websites

You may also utilize privately owned websites with access to Indiana public records to locate inmates in the state. These third-party websites offer an easy and simple way of locating inmates wherever they are incarcerated.

To find inmates, you need to provide the inmate's name, and the website's search engine will run through the various government websites to find the inmate's name that matches your description.

Note that some websites may require you to provide them with a physical description or the inmate's personal information for a quicker search. This information may include their date of birth, height, charges, visible scars and tattoos, eye and hair color, and date of arrest or incarceration.
