Louisiana Inmate Search

Louisiana

Louisiana houses about 19,000 of the 37,000 prisoners in Louisiana's 13 correctional institutions, which the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections manages. In addition, the state has 111 jails in 64 parishes to house more inmates, mainly pretrial inmates, prisoners nearing release, and short-term sentence inmates. This is because the state's facilities cannot accommodate all criminals convicted under state law. As a result, the state reimburses local governments that house convicts serving state terms.

These jails must maintain inmate records per the Louisiana Public Records Act via the relevant authorities. For instance, the DPS&C must maintain the state prisons' inmate records, whereas the sheriff must maintain the parishes' records.

Offender Locator in Louisiana

You can easily find inmates in Louisiana by searching the Imprisoned Person Locator database. You must type in the individuals' full names or the DPS&C-issued number. The search results show the individuals' area and prison location, names, charges, height, race, release dates, and mugshots.

You can also access the imprisoned person locator by calling 225-383-4580. You need to have the offender's DPS&C number or name and birthday to acquire a housing assignment, the location of the institution where they are held, a contact phone number, and an anticipated release date, if applicable.

Locating inmates in the Parish Institutions

Since there are only a handful of inmates in the parish jails, you must visit the county sheriff's website to find the parish's inmate roster. The roster will contain the names of all inmates in the facility, and they are grouped into;

  • Inmates serving prison-time
  • State prisoners awaiting the release
  • Arrestees awaiting trial

You can also customize the list to rearrange the names of the offenders according to your preferences. Other parishes will allow you to search their database by the inmate's name.

If you cannot locate your inmate, you can call the parish directly or contact the sheriff's department and request to view the inmate roster.

Louisiana Automated Victim Notification System (LAVNS)

LAVNS was established in 1999 to help crime victims follow up on court cases, convictions, and offender incarceration. This includes the offender's arrest, bail, court hearings, sentencing, incarceration, and release.

Victims enrolled in LAVNS receive telephone notifications from the Crime Victims Services Bureau on noteworthy occurrences. LAVNS also serves as a backup for the primary notification letter system.

To register with LAVNS, visit the VINELink official website at any time.

Federal Inmates in Louisiana

Finding federal inmates is very simple. If your inmate were incarcerated for violating federal laws, they would likely end up in four federal prisons or two prison camps in the state. You must visit the BOP inmate locator tool to check if they are in these federal facilities.

You can search the tool in two different ways:

  • By inmate's full and legal names
  • By INS, DCDC, FBI, or BOP register numbers

You need to indicate the correct inmate number type on the number option to avoid inaccurate or no search results. Furthermore, the federal inmate numbers are known to one inmate throughout the federal inmate database.
