Maine Inmate Search

Maine

Maine inmate records are public records under the Maine Freedom of Access Act. In that case, you can find inmates incarcerated anywhere in the state. However, this does not apply to juvenile offenders or inmates whose records have been sealed by the court.

Prison administration and departments keep inmate records, usually arrest, court, and criminal records. They will include the full names of the offender, their charges, mugshots, race, age, any visible tattoos or scars, their eye or hair color, and their previous incarceration history.

How to find inmates in the Maine State Prisons

With six state prisons, you can find a state prisoner using the Maine Adult Residents/Clients Search. This system allows you to find inmates in state prisons and those released on community supervision or in community reentry programs in various prisons across the state.

You can find the residents or clients by their mandatory first and last name with an optional middle name or by using the MDOC-issued ID. Note that you can add more information to the name search option, such as their date of birth, gender, race, or charges. However, the MDOC-issued ID is only known to one inmate in the state prison system.

How to Find inmates in Maine County Jails

There are 13 county jails in 16 counties run y the county sheriff's departments. These prisons incarcerate pretrial inmates in many cases. However, short-term sentenced inmates and community reentry inmates are in these facilities.

Finding inmates in these facilities can be hectic, as the facilities conduct daily bookings, transfers, releases, and incarcerations. However, you can find your loved ones in these jails by locating the county jail's inmate roster, usually available through the sheriff's department or the county jail website.

As most prisons have a list of inmates on their inmate roster, some have a searchable database that allows searchers to find their loved ones by their names, dates of incarceration, or arrests.

Can you find an inmate incarcerated for violation of federal laws?

Maine does not have any federal prisons or detention centers. Instead, when an individual is charged with violating federal laws, they are transferred to federal prisons that Maine contracts with. They are regarded as out-of-state inmates. You need to visit the BOP inmate locator tool available on the Bureau of Prisons' official website to find them.

You can find your loved one by their first or last name with an optional middle name, or type in the federal number assigned to them. This may differ as federal inmates can have INS, FBI, DCDC, or BOP register numbers.

If you do not find them using the inmate locator, you can contact the Maine Department of Criminal Justice and request to view the inmate's court records. The court records always indicate where the judge sentenced the inmate to serve time.

Third-party websites

There are hundreds of privately owned websites that provide access to Maine inmate records. These websites are free or charge service fees and offer an easy and quick search to find an inmate in the state.
