Michigan Inmate Search
The Correctional Facilities Administration (CFA), a unique government agency in Michigan, is in charge of all families and inmates. The state takes pleasure in providing each prisoner with medical, mental health, educational, and programming options. This agency is also responsible for providing the general public access to the records of state prisoners. Furthermore, inmate records in Michigan are public records under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act.
When your loved one is charged with and incarcerated for violating Michigan state laws, they will end up in one of the 39 state prisons in Michigan. The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) manages these prisons, incarcerating offenders of all security levels, from minimum to maximum.
This, however, does not mean you can never see them or interact with them again. You can conduct a quick inmate search using the Offender Tracking Information System (OTIS) system on the MDOC website. You can utilize the inmate's full or partial), MDOC number, sex, race, age, status, and any scars or tattoos on the advanced search option.
Finding Federal inmates
When an individual is charged with violating federal laws in Michigan, they will likely end up in one of the two federal prisons in the state run by the North Central Regional Office. Locating federal inmates is simple; when you have their DCDC, FBI, BOP, or INS inmate numbers, you can find the exact inmate you are looking for using the inmate locator tool on the BOP official website.
However, you can utilize the "search by name option" if you do not know the numbers. This option allows you to find your inmate by their first and last names, but you can also include their middle name if they have one or if you want to narrow down the search result.
How to check if the inmate is in the county jail system
Michigan has 88 county jails in 83 counties for housing pretrial inmates. These facilities are managed and run by the county sheriff's department. They also incarcerate inmates sentenced to serve prison time not exceeding a year.
Even with several county jails, you can find a single inmate incarcerated. You only need to know the county where the inmate was arrested or imprisoned. With that, you can visit the county sheriff's department website and find the inmate roster.
These county jails usually offer you a list of offenders to view. When you find the inmate you seek, you can tap on their name to view additional information about the inmate, such as their physical description, aliases, and mugshot. You can also see information about their offenses, including the kind of conviction, county of conviction, sentence duration, and court file number.
Finding an ICE Detainee
Michigan has three immigration detention facilities for individuals arrested on charges of violating immigration laws. You can easily find them using the online detainee locator in the following three ways:
- By their legal or official names and aliases
- Using the ICE-issued detainee number
- By their country of birth
If you cannot find them using the ways mentioned above, you can contact an ICE field agent near you, and they will help you find your inmate.
