Nevada

Nevada has 20 jails and seven prisons. Prisons and jails differ in size, management, location, sentence length, and the number of inmates. Jails are much smaller and accommodate a small number of inmates. On the other hand, prisons are extensive facilities that have a larger carrying capacity. The Nevada Department of Corrections manages prisons in Nevada, whereas local law enforcement agencies administer county jails. Almost every major city and town in Nevada has a jail. On the other hand, prisons are situated in remote areas far from the cities. Lastly, state prisons house inmates with long sentences, while county jails hold inmates with short sentences below one year.

How to Do an Inmate Search

Knowing an inmate's name and the number is a critical step in locating them in Nevada. These details will help in making the search process easier. Inmate records are regarded as public records, which means the public has a right to the records per the Freedom of Information Act.

You can search an inmate online or by making a verbal or written records request. Online searches are much faster and give instant results. However, the information obtained online can have its limitations. One major limitation is that the information is not updated immediately its entered, and this might affect its completeness.

When doing an inmate search, consider using the following platforms.

The Nevada Department of Corrections

The Nevada Department of Corrections is responsible for inmate data in state facilities. The Nevada DOC provides the information on an inmate search tool located on their website.

The search tool requires you to key in the following.

  • The inmate's name
  • The inmate's DOC number.

The search results show the facility housing the inmate and a mugshot image. Besides the inmate's location, the site also offers the inmate's name, gender, ethnicity, age, photo, physical description, offense description, sentence status, and parole hearing details. Below the search results is a download button one can use to download the information.

The County sheriff

When searching for an inmate in a county jail, the sheriff's website will be the best source of information. Visit the website and see if there is an inmate roster or a search tool. If the website has an inmate roster, navigate the list to locate the inmate you are searching for. Use the inmate's first and last name if they have a search option. If the county does not have an online inmate roster, contact the county sheriff's office and request the information.

VINELINK

www.vinelink.com is a notification site that helps victims and family members stay informed of the inmate's whereabouts. VINE tracks convicted felons by mining data from various public databases, including county, state, and federal criminal databases and the sex offender database. To use the VINE services, one has to register on their website or mobile application. Registered members get text, email, or TTY notifications informing them of the inmate's incarceration status. Vine will notify them whenever an inmate is transferred, released, escapes, or dies.
