New Mexico Inmate Search

Updated on: January 31, 2024
New Mexico

Sometimes a person may want to know where their loved one has been incarcerated. An inmate search will enable them to find the location of the facility housing them. When conducting an inmate search, ensure you know which kind of facility is housing the inmate. Knowing whether an inmate is in a county or state facility will help focus your search on the relevant agency. There are eleven state prisons and 27 county jails in New Mexico. The New Mexico Correctional Department keeps Inmate records in state prisons, and county sheriffs maintain inmate records in county jails. You're entitled to a copy of inmate records upon request.

In this article, you will discover what an inmate record is, where to obtain inmate records and how to get updates on changes in the inmate records.

What Is an Inmate Record?

Inmate records are a compilation of files recorded on an inmate as they go through the criminal justice system. They include arrest, court and jail records. Inmate records can also include probation and parole records. Inmate records are considered public information thanks to the freedom of information act. Inmate records contain an inmate's identifying information and records of criminal procedures. The personal identifying information includes the following.

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Aliases
  • Height and weight
  • Hair and eye colour
  • Place of residence

Records of criminal procedures include the following.

  • The arresting date
  • The court of conviction
  • The sentence issued
  • Release date
  • Charges (felony or misdemeanour)

Where to Obtain Inmate Records?

As stated earlier, inmate records are maintained by the New Mexico Department of Corrections and the county sheriffs. So, where can one obtain inmate records in New Mexico?

The New Mexico DOC

The New Mexico Correctional Department has a helpful search tool that provides information on current and formerly incarcerated offenders. The offender search also shows information on inmates on parole and probation. The information is restricted to inmates in state prisons because the NMCD does not have jurisdiction over county jails. To search for an inmate on the offender locator, use the inmate's name or the NMCD number.

Even though the website is updated daily, the NMCD cannot guarantee the accuracy or completeness of the data provided due to changes in the inmate's status. Contact the New Mexico Department of Corrections at [email protected] or 505-383-2804 to confirm the information.

County Sheriffs

County sheriffs maintain the county jails and also keep records of inmates within the jail. You can access the jail records from the sheriff's website. Look for a locator tool on the website and use the inmate's first and last name to search. If the sheriff's office does not have an online inmate roster, contact the office via phone or visit the office directly and request the information.

How to Know About Changes in The Inmate's Status?

When inmate data changes, what you previously gathered becomes irrelevant. So, how do you keep track of these data changes? VINE is the answer. VINE is a widely used notification service that provides victims with regular updates on an inmate's status. Vine keeps track of inmates' movements and informs its members of transfers, releases, escapes, and deaths. To obtain the service, go to their website and register as a victim of a family member, as well as provide the inmate's information. VINE will notify you of changes in the inmate's status via text, email, or phone call.
