The Texas criminal justice system features various correctional facilities, including state prisons, federal facilities, county jails, private prisons, ICE detention centers, and community corrections. There are a total of 269 correctional facilities in this state. A Texas inmate record entails all items that follow an individual through the criminal justice system. They can include police reports, arrest records, fingerprints, mugshots, DNA, court records, confinement facility documents, audio, and video clips, among other evidence.

Most inmate records contain personal and administrative information regarding an offender. Personal details include the inmate's full name, aliases, date of birth, gender, age, race, and physical description like height, weight, eye color, hair color, tattoos, any defining marks, and scars. On the other hand, official data includes the person's registration number, booking date and time, arresting agency, bail or bond amount, charge description, criminal history, sentence information, confinement facility location, court dates, and maximum release date.

Under the Texas Public Information Act, inmate records are publicly available. This means the general public or interested parties can obtain these records from record custodians upon request. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) is the primary record custodian in Texas. You can request TDCJ for inmate records and related information at the state level. Additionally, you can obtain them from the county sheriff's office or police department near you.

Locating an incarcerated loved one in Tennessee usually depends on where an inmate is confined, as follows:

Texas State Prisons

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice runs all state prisons in Texas. This agency is the most extensive prison system in the United States, holding more than 157000 incarcerated offenders across the 109 correctional facilities. It is important to note that Texas also contracts with nine private prisons. The daily population of inmates in TDCJ prisons has been rising steadily in recent years.

Most inmates in these facilities are housed in general population units, which are vast and accommodate thousands of offenders. Specialized units are designated for inmates who require medical, mental, and senior care.

To locate an offender in TDCJ's custody, visit the Department's official website. This agency allows you to search for an incarcerated inmate using the "Inmate Information Search" tool. TDCJ offers this service for public safety and convenience. It requires you to provide one or more of the following fields:

  • Last Name
  • First Name
  • TDCJ Number
  • SID Number
  • Gender
  • Race

This site is updated on working days, and the data is at least 24 hours old.

Federal Prisons

The South Central Regional Office oversees 18 stand-alone federal prisons and nine prison camps in Texas. These federal facilities together house 14678 incarcerated individuals. Suppose you believe that someone you know or a loved one is serving time at any of these facilities; begin your search on the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) official website.

BOP allows you to conduct an inmate search using the "Find an Inmate" search tool on the website. You can search by name or registration number.

County Jails

County jails are typically smaller than state prisons. They house offenders awaiting trial or serving short-term sentences, usually a year or less. Most county jails house offenders convicted of misdemeanor offenses. County sheriff's offices are responsible for operating and managing county jails. On the other hand, local police departments run city jails.

Most jail facilities in Texas allow you access to an online inmate roster featuring a list of current inmates at the facility. These rosters are usually posted on the sheriff's office; on the jail's webpage.

Call the jail or sheriff's office if you cannot locate your loved one.

ICE Detention Centers

If your loved one is detained at a Texas ICE Detention Facility, use the "Online Detainee Locator System – ICE."
