The Utah corrections and justice system typically includes various correctional facilities such as state prisons, county jails, and ICE detention centers. Utah inmate records comprise all documentation following an inmate through the criminal justice system. These records usually originate from local law enforcement, confinement facilities, and courts, although they are not limited to only these agencies.

These records feature a compilation of demographic and official information of individuals detained or serving time within Utah. According to the Utah Government Records Access and Management Act, most of the information in these records is available for public perusal. At the state level, the general public or interested parties can obtain inmate records from the Utah Department of Corrections. Alternatively, these records are available at the county sheriff's office or local police department.

People who obtain these records can expect to see the inmate's identifying details such as full name, aliases, age, gender, date of birth, nationality, race, and physical description, including height, weight, tattoos, eye color, hair color, scars, and body marks. Apart from the above bio-data, inmate records also contain official details such as the offender's identification number, arresting agency, booking date and time, bail or bond amount, criminal history, description of current charges, custody status, sentence information, court dates, mugshots, transfer details, and maximum release date.

Inmate search criteria usually depend on the type of confinement facility, as follows:

Utah State Facilities

The Utah Department of Corrections is in charge of the safety, security, and custody of all state prisons in Utah. This state's prison system comprises only two correctional facilities, Utah State Correctional Facility and Central Utah Correctional Facility. The Utah DOC also oversees parole and probation services for inmates in the state. The recidivism rate in this jurisdiction is about 40%, meaning that about 4 out of 10 prisoners will return to prison within three years after release.

It is essential to point out that Utah's prison system does not have enough beds to accommodate all state prisoners. Hence, through the Inmate Placement Program, DOC sends eligible offenders to counties contacted with the state to provide housing.

To conduct an inmate search, visit the DOC's official website and locate the "Offender Search Tool" link on the homepage. This tool allows you to search for an inmate using the following parameters:

  • Search By Name: First Name, Middle Name, and Last Name (First and Last Names are mandatory)
  • Search By Offender Number: Enter Offender Number

County Jails

Designated county sheriff's offices operate 27 county jails in Utah. Typically, county jails house offenders awaiting trial, bond, or serving short-term sentences, usually a year or less. They often hold offenders convicted of less severe crimes, such as misdemeanor offenses.

Most county jails provide an online inmate search tool on the sheriff's official website where you can check if someone is in jail. Most have online inmate rosters featuring all current inmates at the jail facility.

However, there are instances when you cannot find your loved one on the roster, often due to transfers. In this case, you are encouraged to call the jail or the county sheriff's website to inquire about their whereabouts. The jail staff will ask for the inmate's name and identification number.

ICE Detention Center

If you believe your loved one is an ICE detainee at the Washington County Jail (Purgatory Correctional Facility), conduct your search using the "Online Detainee Locator System – ICE."
